Why is being a vegetarian equivalent to going green? All this has to do with meat consumption. Rising demands for meat has created a boom in the livestock farming industry, which has caused greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution and severe damage to the natural ecosystem.
According to a report published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, methane (greenhouse gas) released by 1.05 billion cows in the world contributes to 18% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions, which is 1/3 of the total methane emission in the world.
In America alone, 2.6kg of grain is needed for to produce 1kg of chicken, 5kg of grain for 1kg of beef, and a whopping 7kg of grain for just 1kg of pork!
If we go vegetarian for a day in a week, we will save up to 12 million tons of crops, which in turn can save 60 million people around the world from starving. If we spare all crops from being livestock feed, these crops can be used to save at least 500 million people from hunger.
